In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a detailed Vespa using Adobe Illustrator. First, you’ll learn how to create the base shapes of the Vespa using the Pen and the Ellipse Tools. Next, you’ll see how you can add depth and shading for your shapes using the complex gradients, basic blending, masking and vector shape building techniques along with some effects. Finally, you will learn how to add some extra highlights and shadows for your Vespa.

Tutorial Preview:

Create a New Document

1. Press (Ctrl +N) to create a new document. Select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu, and enter 600 in the width box and 800 in the height box then click on the Advanced button. Select RGB, Screen (72ppi) and make sure that the Align New Objects to Pixel Grid box is unchecked before you click OK.

Draw the Front Shield and Bodywork

2. Start by drawing a shape using the Pen Tool (P).

3. Once your objects are drawn, fill the two black objects with R=140, G=172, B=115 and then fill the remaining object with R=92, G=113, B=78.

Draw the Side Cover, the Footrest and the Mudguard

4. Keep working with the Pen Tool (P). Draw objects and fill them as shown in the images below.

Draw the Front Wheel

5. Pick the Ellipse Tool (L) and draw a 140px by 234px object. Next, rotate this ellipse to an angle of about -6 degrees and then place it to the correct position as shown in the first image below. Make sure that your ellipse is still selected and go to Object > Transform > Scale. Select the Non-Uniform, enter 65 in the Horizontal box and 82 in the Vertical box and then click Copy. Move the duplicate 2px down and move it 24px to the right. Finally, fill the bigger ellipse with R=35, G=31, B=32 and fill the remaining ellipse with R=241, G=242, B=242.

6. Select the two newly created ellipses and go to Object > Transform > Scale. Select Uniform, enter 65 in the Scale box and then click Copy. Next, send the results to back (Ctrl +Shift +Left Square Bracket) and place them to the correct position as shown below.
