Premium Tutorial: Leather Jacket

Through this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a male jacket using Adobe Illustrator. We’ll be creating base shapes using the basic shapes, some basic vector shape building techniques (Offset Path, Blend…) and the Pathfinder palette. Then we will be adding details using the gradients and the Transparency palette. We will also use effects like: Feather, Gaussian Blur, and Drop Shadow to create a vivid male jacket. Let’s begin!

Tutorial Preview:

Create a New Document

1. Press (Ctrl +N) to create a new document. Select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu, enter 800 in the width box and 800 in the height box then click on the Advanced button. Select RGB and Screen (72ppi).

Create the Back Panel of the Jacket

2. Start by drawing a shape using the Pen Tool (P).

3. Once your shape is drawn, reselect it and go to the Object > Transform > Reflect. Select Vertical and click Copy. Drag the duplicate that we have just created to the left. Don’t forget to hold the Shift key on the keyboard for straight dragging. Next, reselect the two newly created shapes. Open the Pathfinder palette (Window > Pathfinder) and click on the Unite button. Finally, fill the resulting shape with R=14, G=13, B=11.

Create the Front Panel of the Jacket

4. With the help of the Pen Tool (P), create a “Front Panel” shape and fill this shape with R=47, G=38, B=29. Keep working with the Pen Tool (P). Create a “Sleeve” shape and fill it with the radial gradient as shown below.

5. Keep working with the Pen Tool (P). Use this tool to create a shape as shown below. Once your shape is drawn, reselect it and go to the Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -1.5px Offset and then click OK. While the resulting shape is selected, go to the Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter a -2.5px Offset and then click OK.

6. Fill the large red shape with the linear gradient. Reselect this shape and go to the Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Follow the data as shown in the second image and then click OK. Now select the medium red shape, fill it with None and add a 1px stroke (R=14, G=13, B=11). Keep this stroke selected. Open the Stroke palette (Window > Stroke) then check the Dashed Line box. Enter 2px in the dash box and 2px in the gap box.

7. Continue to create a curved red line with the help of the Pen Tool (P). Next, reselect the two red objects and fill them with None. Add a 3px stroke (apply the linear gradient across stroke). Now select and group (Ctrl +G) all the shapes created from step 5 up to this time.
